If you pose the question:
“Where do people go to invest?”
Most people would respond by saying,
“The stock market.”
While this is by far the most common response, it is, in fact, quite wrong.
All around the world, investing is carried out using a wide variety of financial instruments that are primarily traded on things called exchanges.
How many exchanges are there? A lot, but more on that later.
When people say “The Stock Market,” they are oftentimes incorrectly referring to the global financial system where people trade all types of things including money, metals, fruits, contracts, and pieces of companies.
Pieces of companies? Yes, and that is what people in the English-speaking world are talking about when they say stocks.
